Advanced Healthcare Interpreter’s Guide to Diabetes
10-hour Certificate of Attendance Online Course for Advanced Skills (E-Learning Course)
AHI08OL

Prerequisites

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and it is highly recommended that students have interpreting experience and are trained interpreters.

Brief Description

This 10-hour Certificate of Attendance online course will help interpreters with advanced skills expand their knowledge in the world of diabetes care. An initial narrated PowerPoint will introduce the anatomy and physiology of the human endocrine system; the nature of type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes, symptoms, tests and treatments for the disease, as well as an introduction to the various health professionals who provide care to diabetic patients. Vocabulary exercises will help students become comfortable with the language of diabetes both in English and in their non-English target language. Course materials will include bilingual glossaries in a variety of commonly interpreted languages in the U.S. (Arabic, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese). Recorded bilingual dialogues will give learners the opportunity to practice interpreting, with immediate access to their own recorded interpretation and a translated script so as to compare the two for accuracy. A final section will address specific challenges to interpreting in diabetes, such as the difficulty of finding linguistic equivalents for the many foods discussed by dietitians or described by patients. Interactive exercises and assessments will follow each section, and successful completion of the quizzes will be required for advancement to the next section.

The course is approved by the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) for 1 Continuing Education Units, by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) for 10 Continuing Education Hours and by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) for 8 General Continuing Education Credits.
