20-hour Certificate of Attendance Online Course for Advanced Skills (E-Learning Course)
ANT20OL

Prerequisites

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and it is highly recommended that students have interpreting experience and are trained interpreters.

Brief Description

Expand your interpreting skills and work opportunities by enhancing your memory aids using the FAST Method, a note-taking technique created by CCCS, lnc.™ Although note-taking may not be a common practice among healthcare interpreters, we have seen a growing need for incorporating this method into consecutive and simultaneous interpreting for family meetings, healthcare workforce trainings and groups. Interpreters working in any field such as legal, educational and community may use this technique.

The FAST Method is unique to CCCS, lnc.™ and differs from the traditional shorthand by combining the use of symbols, healthcare and legal abbreviations. This interactive 9-lesson course provides interpreters with clear steps on how to develop a personal note-taking style in order to maximize ones memory capacity by practicing over 150 exercises. During this course, the students will be guided through the note-taking process while applying their developed skills.

Towards the end of the course, the student is provided with the opportunity to  take notes on paragraphs of information. This mimics the interpreting encounter and enables the student to master his/her note-taking abilities. Due to the quantity and quality of practice, the  student should finish the course while using all of the tools needed to improve note-taking abilities and above all accuracy in the interpreting encounter. Learning this advanced skill will facilitate the flow and accuracy of the interpreting encounter as note-taking can be highly personalized.

This course was designed by a multidisciplinary team including healthcare interpreters and a physician.

The course is approved by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) for 20 Continuing Education Hours, by the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) for 2 Continuing Education Units and by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) for 8 General Continuing Education Credits.
